Abstract

Iron sand is an important raw material in the steel industry in Indonesia. Iron sand is often found in coastal areas such as the coast of Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of particle size and microstructure of iron sand on mechanical and magnetic properties and the effect of adding PEG-400 on the mechanical properties of iron pellets. The tests carried out were hardness tests using the Hardness Brinell Tester and compressive strength tests referring to the ASTM D3410 standard with type HUNG TA HT8503. In this research, the particle size variations used were mesh 80, mesh 100, and mesh 200 which were printed with a pressure of 5.5 tonnes with a composition of 90% iron sand and 10% PEG-400 and sintered at a temperature of 800? for 2 hours. The results of the Brinell hardness test on a particle size of 80 mesh were 1,909 kg/mm2, then 100 mesh was 1,950 kg/mm2, and 200 mesh was 2,888 kg/mm2. The compressive strength test results obtained a value for a particle size of 80 mesh, which was 0.16 MPa, then 100 mesh, which was 0.16 MPa, and 200 mesh, which was 0.24 MPa. The results of microstructural observations at a particle size of 80 mesh, the sample surface contained a small amount of PEG-400 and appeared porous, at 100 mesh the sample surface appeared porous, and at 200 mesh the sample surface appeared to be uniform between iron sand powder and PEG400. The research results prove that samples with a particle size of 200 mesh (75 m) have high mechanical properties. The finer or smaller the particle size, the higher the mechanical properties it produces.
