Abstract

The main energy source not only comes from petroleum, natural gas and coal, but also comes from agricultural waste, namely coconut shells which are processed into briquettes because of their renewable feature. This scientific writing aims to determine the effect of variations in particle size on the characteristics of briquettes made from coconut shell on calorific value. In this study, particle size variations were selected from 20 mesh, 40 mesh and 60 mesh within a printing time of 10 minutes held by a load of 5 kg. The lowest water content test results with a particle size of 60 mesh were 6.16%. Because of the influence of particle size on air content, the smaller the particle size, the lower the air content value. The highest briquette resistance test results with a particle size of 60 mesh were 95.26%. Because the small particle size is able to strengthen the surface bond between coconut shell charcoal and tapioca flour, so the small particle size can withstand impacts better than the large size. The highest heating value test results occurred in sample III with a particle size of 60 mesh. Because of the influence of small particle size on the heating value, the smaller the particle size produces a higher heating value. This is because 60 mesh briquettes have less water content, which causes the calorific value of the briquettes to be higher. Longer burning rate test results at 60 mesh size. Due to the influence of the small particle size, it is able to store the heating value of the briquettes so that the resulting flame will last longer. Overall, providing variations in particle size at 60 mesh is in accordance with SNI 01-6235-2000 standards so that it can be used as an alternative biomass fuel.
