Abstract

Critical Reading courses in higher education play a central role in developing students' critical reading skills. In a global context that continues to develop, the need for learning approaches that are inclusive, adaptive and responsive to student diversity is increasingly urgent. This research aims to investigate the impact of optimizing academic literacy in the Critical Reading course by integrating local wisdom, audio-visual elements, and American Sign Language (ASL). The method used is a mixed approach, which includes quantitative and qualitative analysis. Findings indicate that although the majority of students recognize the benefits of Critical Reading courses, there is an urgent need to improve tutorial support and contextualize the material to their respective disciplines of study. The implications of the results of this research are in line with academic literacy theory, which emphasizes the importance of developing critical reading skills through a holistic approach. Recommendations include the development of additional tutorial modules, adapting curricula to encompass disciplinary contexts, and implementing more adaptive teaching strategies. The conclusions of this research emphasize the need to optimize Critical Reading courses as an integral part of efforts to increase student academic literacy.
