Abstract

Junior high school students are a group of teenagers between the age of 12-15 years. They are definitely the active users of social media. The results of preliminary observation show that social media has become the important part of their daily lives since they spend 3-4 hours every day only for accessing social media such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp. As a matter of fact, the high frequency of using social media has not been equipped by sufficient digital literacy skills. As a result, the students are unable to use social media wisely. Some of them became hoax disseminators. Referring to all of the problems, this community service aims to improve the digital literacy skills of SMP Negeri 37 Pekanbaru students through a government program entitled #BijakBersosmed. This community service was carried out by using two methods. The first method is lecturing which aims to equip students with insight about how to use social media wisely. The second method is practice which aims to train students to be able to identify information obtained from social media. After the students joined the community service, they have higher critical awareness. Also, they know the ethics of using the social media. Finally, the students are expected to be able to filter out hoaxes, hate speech, and stop the oversharing phenomenon among the social media users.
