Abstract

This research is motivated by the widespread trend of religious moderation thinking, especially in Islamic educational institutions, Islamic boarding schools. Islamic educational institutions such as dayah, surou, pondok, pesantren, madrasa, Islamic schools and universities -both public and private-have historically played an important role especially in building the consolidation of Islam in Indonesia. Through the term renewal, Islamic educational institutions play a crucial role in strengthening Indonesian Islam to produce a young generation of "ummatan wasathan". However, the reality is that Islamic boarding schools are often considered radical, intolerant and extremist; coupled with research which states that Riau is one of the 6 provinces with the lowest religious tolerance. Rokan Hulu Regency, which is known as Negeri Seribu Suluk, in the last 10 years has rapidly developed 36 Islamic boarding schools, according to data from the Rokan Hulu Ministry of Religion. This research aims to increase knowledge and insight about the model of religious moderation in Islamic boarding schools; become references and academic texts in the development of Islamic Religious Education. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Observation data collection techniques, interviews, documentation and literature. Research target 2 samples of Islamic boarding schools, namely Darussalam Islamic Boarding School and al-Royyan Islamic Boarding School, and support information from Head of the Ministry of Religion of Rokan Hulu Regency. The results of the study show that in general Islamic Boarding Schools have implemented the concept of religious moderation and none show radical or extreme views. Of the 4 indicators of religious moderation, namely national commitment, tolerance, non-violence and accommodation towards local culture, they have been fulfilled but need to be strengthened in accommodative indicators for local culture so that the presence of Islamic boarding schools can contribute constructive thoughts to religious moderation in Islamic boarding schools and be more accepted by the community. by prioritizing the values of tawasuth, tawazun, fair and tasamuh.
