Abstract

The goal to be achieved from this research is to analyze and explain the principal's strategy in improving teacher performance at SMP Negeri 39 Pekanbaru City. The nature of the research is qualitative research, with a descriptive type. There were 13 research informants, consisting of the principal, vice principal, several teachers, and several school staff. Qualitative data analysis was carried out interactively and continued continuously until completion. The results of the study show that the principal has helped teachers develop their behavior patterns through meetings at the beginning of the semester, monthly meetings on discipline by the principal; joint discussions in the Wa teacher group regarding teacher behavior and school participation and involving school supervisors in teacher development, but the results of teacher discipline performance were not satisfactory. There are still cases of delays in entering school and class every month. The school principal has implemented a training program for teachers using an in-house training strategy implemented in schools regarding differentiation and coaching lesson plans; teacher competence improvement workshops through PMM and independent teaching; and Webinars/Training from outside the school. But the principal's strategy is to provide guidance and teacher training. In motivating teachers, the principal has carried out a discussion strategy in monthly coaching meeting activities. However, in integrating the reward model for teachers who are able to create work performance through efforts to increase creativity, innovation, and competence, it has not been implemented properly. It is suggested that the principal's strategy should be improved in providing guidance and teacher training. Similarly, efforts should be made to improve the work ethic of teachers, to be highly disciplined and punctual in carrying out tasks given by the principal.
