Abstract
Highway is a transportation infrastructure that is very important in supporting various social and economic activities. The objectives of highway development include organizing the realization of traffic that is safe, fast, and comfortable. Therefore, road infrastructure requires special attention to the safety and comfort of the road. Puddles of rainwater on road pavements that often occur in the rainy season result in disruption of driver comfort. So, the researchers conducted a study of adding wood ash to porous asphalt to road pavement. Porous asphalt is a mixture of asphalt with low sand content to get a high air cavity. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum asphalt content values in porous asphalt mixture and to determine the effect of adding wood ash on porous asphalt by 50% and 100% to fillers using asphalt penetration 60/70 on Marshall characteristics and permeability in accordance with Australian Asphalt Pavement Association specifications (AAPA) 1997 and AAPA 2004. The study was based on journals and specifications used on porous asphalt. The study was conducted at the Civil Engineering Laboratory of the Islamic University of Riau with a variation of 4,0% bitumen content; 4,5%; 5,0%; 5,5%, and 6,0% and wood ash content of 0%, 50% and 100% of filler. The analysis of the performance of the strength of the porous asphalt mixture was carried out by the Marshall Test and for the analysis of the porus asphalt mixtures model (permeability) carried out by the Falling Head Permeability (FHP) method. Based on the results of the study, the percentage of coarse aggregate usage was 13,47%, moderate aggregate was 82,20%, 2,19% fine aggregate, 2,14% sand and asphalt content variation was 4,0%; 4,5%; 5,0%; 5,5%, and 6,0%. So that the optimum bitumen content obtained in porous asphalt mixture is 5.5%. The addition of wood ash on porous asphalt fulfilled the 1997 Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) specifications for Marshall and AAPA 2004 characteristics of permeability. The addition of wood ash 0%, 50%, and 100% affects the porous asphalt mixture. The greater the percentage of wood ash addition, the higher VFA value, stability and flow. But the VMA, VIM, MQ, and permeability values are getting lower. The addition of wood ash in this study shows that the higher the value of stability will increase the locking of particles on the pavement, so that the surface layer will be more resistant to changes (deformation) such as bleeding and waves. While on permeability, the value of permeability is lower, which means that the addition of wood ash in the porous asphalt mixture does not significantly influence because the smaller the air cavity in the mixture. The addition of wood ash to the porous asphalt mixture increases the value of stability which can improve the ability of road construction in receiving loads, but the pavement layer is not permeable and the water flowing on the surface is slower.
