Abstract
Most English learners want to be fluent in English but quite a lot of British students at the Islamic University of Riau avoid speaking in English. According to empirical studies, the success of language learners especially the smooth component was also significantly affected by self-esteem. In this regard, this study was conducted to determine the amount and rate of speech self-esteem in students majoring in English at the Islamic University of Riau. The design of this research is descriptive quantitative. There is one variable that is fluency. Its population is half of six students and eight semesters of the school year with a total of 112 students 2012/2013. Purposive sampling technique successfully filters out 16 students as the sample. The research findings showed that 11 of 16 students high self-esteem are categorized into levels of non-conversant with a range between 98-147spm. Conversely, there are 5 students categorized into levels conversant with a range between 167-196 SPM. From the interpretation of the data, the authors concluded that not all students high selfcategorized into fluent level.
