Abstract

This study examines the variation of the Malay language of the Selatpanjang people, Tebing Tinggi District, Meranti Islands Regency. The Selatpanjang people have different backgrounds and different social statuses so that they can trigger the diversity of the Malay language in interaction, this makes the author interested in conducting research related to the variations of the Malay language of the Selatpanjang community, Tebing Tinggi District, Meranti Islands Regency. The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze, interpret and conclude language variations and language functions of the people of Selatpanjang, Tebing Tinggi District, Meranti Islands Regency. The data collection technique used is observation, recording, observing, and taking notes. The data analysis technique used is data reduction, data presentation, and verification. Based on the results of this study, there were 285 data, namely (1) variations of the Malay language of the Selatpanjang community, Tebing Tinggi District, Meranti Islands Regency, the researchers found 259 data with details of language variations in terms of speakers totaling 218 data, including 203 dialect data, 2 data for chronolect, 11 sociolect data, and idiolect 2data; language variations in terms of use totaling 5 data, and language variations in terms of formality totaling 36 data, including 26 data for casual variety, 6 data for intimate variety, 2 data for formal variety, 1 data for frozen variety, and 1 data for business variety. (2) the function of the language variation of the Malay language of the people of Selatpanjang, Tebing Tinggi District, Meranti Islands Regency, the researcher found 26 data with details of 4 data of instrumental functions, 3 data of regulatory functions, 7 data of personal functions, 2 data of interactional functions, 2 data of representational functions 7 data, 2 data for heuristic functions, and 1 data for imaginative functions. The results of this study can be concluded that: (1) the language variations that are mostly found are language variations in terms of usage, because the distribution of language variations in terms of speakers is dialect which is more commonly found, this is because almost all of the conversational dialogues of the Selatpanjang community use Malay, whereas The fewest language variations found were kronolect and idiolect, because kronolect found only 2 data whose vocabulary was used in the past and was rarely used by the Selatpanjang people and idiolect found only 2 data about the characteristics of speakers, namely the color of the voice and the use of the greeting "Yang" by the seller to each buyer.
