Abstract

In recent years the use of diesel oil in oil base mud formulations has had several drawbacks that can have an impact on the environment around the drilling area when used. To minimize this, the researchers began to study sludge made from vegetable oil which is more environmentally friendly, low toxicity, and biodegradable. In this research, sludge made from soybean oil and diesel oil has been carried out. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a mud design made from soybean oil which is non-toxicity oil and diesel oil which is toxicity oil on the rheology of drilling mud. Each of these samples has an OWR concentration of 70:30. The samples were tested for rheologies, such as density, plastic viscosity, yield point, gel strength, filtration loss, and mud cake. The samples were tested at temperatures (T=80°F and T=150°F). The result was that the mud sample made from soybean oil met API (American Petroleum Institute) standards. The density value of the soybean oil-based mud sample ranges from 8.6 ppg, the plastic viscosity value is 22 cp, the gel strength value is 10 sec 20 lb/100ft, the gel strength value is 10 min 26 lb/ft, the yield point value is 20 lb/ft, the filtration loss value is 3.5 ml, and the mud cake value is 2.3 mm. The decrease in the rheology value is due to the effect of the high-temperature increase from T=80°F to T=150°F, the higher the temperature given, the resulting lower the rheological value.
