Abstract
Motorized vehicle components, namely brake pads, need attention in efforts to protect consumers and reduce the percentage of road accidents. Brake lining is a component in a motorized vehicle that functions to slow or stop the vehicle. This study aims to determine the quality of the brake lining which is affected by the hardness and material of the brake lining. In this study, variations in braking load ranging from 3 kg,4 kg and 5 kg with drum brake pad brands, namely Honda (Original), Aspira and VTR in 10 minutes and a speed of 50 km/hour for each load and brake pad type. The lowest wear rate occurred on Honda brake linings (Original) with a braking load of 3 kg, namely 6.5.10-7 g/mm2.second, while the highest wear rate was on VTR brake linings with a braking load of 5 kg, namely 4.9.10-6 g/ mm2.second. This is caused by the increasing load and the brake lining material which is classified as asbestos, namely Aspira and VTR. Meanwhile, Honda brake pads (Original) are non-asbestos. The basic ingredients of nonasbestos materials have wear-resistant and heat-resistant properties and contents, namely Kevlar and Carbon Fiber. The highest hardness result (Vickers) was on Honda brake pads (Original), namely 299 VHN. Because the brake pads for the Honda brand (Original) are made from non-asbestos which has hard and strong properties and ingredients, namely Steel Fiber and Rock Wool.
