Abstract

This study aims to find out how the process of intercultural communication between Tionghoa people and local Malay residents is in Siapiapi chart. This research focuses more on describing how the adaptation of intercultural communication between the Tionghoa and Malay ethnicities in the use of language in everyday life. This research method uses qualitative methods with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques used in this study are observation, interviews, and documentation. Analysis of the data used in this study using data collection techniques, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The subjects of this study were 6 community informants who lived in the city of Bagan Siapiapi with 3 Tionghoa ethnic people and 3 local Malay ethnic people. The results of this study indicate that the adaptation of intercultural communication between Chinese and local Malay ethnicities in the ready-made chart in the use of language in everyday life based on the theory of elements of communication has been running smoothly and well. In this study, intercultural communication uses two types of communication used in everyday life, namely verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication is a form of communication that uses spoken and written information to convey information. While nonverbal communication is a form of communication that uses language directly to convey information.
