Abstract

Final year students of course already have an idea of the future and begin to explore their interests in careers and become a source of thought where students begin to learn to distinguish between preferred job choices and the work they aspire to. However, based on data from the Central Statistics Agency, the number of Open Unemployment Rates for university graduates in 2020 has increased. Based on this, it can be interpreted that there are many workers who work but are not in accordance with the aspired goals, as a result, individuals are willing to accept any type of work. This is a form of the phenomenon of lack of career planning, so that when they graduate from university, many students experience unemployment. This study was to determine whether there is a relationship between optimism and career planning in the final students of the Islamic University of Riau. The subjects of this study amounted to 387 final year students of the Islamic University of Riau. The sampling technique used is the cluster sampling technique. The method of taking the optimism scale was adapted from Saputri's research (2014) with a total of 30 question items. And the career planning scale was adapted from Fina Adinda's research with a total of 24 statement items. The analytical method used is nonparametric correlation. Based on the results of the correlation test between optimism and career planning, the correlation coefficient value (r) = 0.321 and a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05). This shows that there is a significant positive relationship between optimism and career planning, the higher the optimism, the higher the career planning for final year students at the Islamic University of Riau.
