Abstract

The development of natural composite technology (Natural Composite) has a specialty in its nature which can be recycled or in other terms renewable. One of the uses of composite technology with natural fiber materials is that they can compete with products made from metal and synthetics, because they are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. This study aims to make composite boards using empty palm fruit fiber as reinforcement which has been given alkali treatment and bonded by epoxy resin. In this study, the composition of empty palm fiber bunches with a value of 50% and 50% epoxy resin, the alkaline treatment given was 20% in immersion time for 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours and 5 hours. The results of the tensile strength test at 2 hours, 3 hours and 4 hours of alkaline immersion showed a linear increase of 10.06 MPa, 24.71 MPa and 30.72 MPa, while there was degradation of the tensile strength test results in 5 hours of alkaline immersion. 30.44 MPa. The results of the impact test were inversely proportional to the tensile strength, the lowest impact value was obtained at the 4 hour alkaline immersion time of 0.394 Joule/mm2 and the highest impact value at the 2 hour alkaline immersion time was 0.396 Joule/mm2, while the 5 hour alkaline immersion time increased the price. impact is 0.395 Joule/mm2. Because the alkaline immersion time in the empty palm oil fruit bunches provides optimal interfacial bonding with the epoxy resin matrix thereby increasing the tensile strength and impact price, while the alkaline immersion time is too long can damage the cellulose elements to decompose and dirt re-attaches so that the composite board degrades in strength. tensile and impact prices. The results of macro observations showed that the color of the fiber was getting darker (brown in color) with an alkaline immersion time of 4 hours.
