Abstract

The photo of the winner of the first prize belongs to Laurent Van Der Stockt with the title The Battle for the last stronghold of Daesh. The old city of Mosul (Battle for the Last Stronghold of Daesh. Old City of Mosul) at the Days Japan International Photojournalism Award 2018 is an object that is rich in social and human values, this research uses qualitative analysis methods and uses Roland Barthes' Semiotics Theory which interprets the meanings contained in photos through connotative and denotative signs from the aspect of social values. The results of the 3 photos that were tested and researched include; The meaning of the social value contained in the first photo (youth care) is that as a social being, you have to help people who are in need of help, which is indicated by the outstretched hand of the youth in the object of the photo to an old woman after the war conflict in Mosul City, Iraq. The meaning of social values contained in the second photo (Steps of the Journey) is the social concern of a woman to take care of a small child who walks in front of her, it can be seen while walking down the escalation path with a watchful gaze looking down to stay safe from mines or bombs that might hurt them later. The meaning of social values contained in the third photo (Community Restlessness) is a man's social concern to provide assistance to those in need. It can be seen from the crowd of people in the city of Mosul, Iraq, there is a small child with a sad face with an expression of raising his hand, it can be interpreted as a request for help to anyone who realizes what he means, but because the community is apathetic, no one helps, only a young man is recorded. in this photo who helped him and lifted the little boy into a car that had been damaged after the war conflict.
