Abstract

Semiotics is a scientific study that systematically examines signs in the form of language that have meaning, these meaning signs are grouped into three aspects, namely, icons, indexes, symbols. The problems studied in this study are (1) What are the iconic aspects in the novel The Best Gift by J.S Khairen?, (2) What are the index aspects in the novel The Best Gift by J.S Khairen?, (3) What are the symbolic aspects in the novel The Best Gift by J.S Khairen? ?. The purpose of this research is to obtain data and information to describe and interpret signs which include aspects of icons, indexes and symbols. The main theory used in this study is Charles Sander Peirce's semiotic theory put forward by Sobur (2016). This research uses a qualitative approach, a type of library research. The method used is descriptive method, looking for facts with valid interpretations in analyzing data properly. The data collection technique the writer uses is the hermeneutic technique. The analysis technique that the writer uses is content analysis. Semiotic signs in the novel The Best Gift by J.S Khairen found 90 data, on the icon aspect data in the Best Gift novel by J.S Khairen, there were 40 data, the index aspect in the Best Gift novel by J.S Khairen 23 data, the symbolic aspect in the Best Gift novel by J.S Khairen J.S Khairen 27 data. The most dominant aspect in this novel is the aspect of the icon, because of the similarity with the cultural context. Novels are usually based on the author's experience in interacting with real life in society within the cultural sphere.
