Abstract

Listening Song This research aimed to find out the types of spelling error and the percentage of spelling error faced by students at SMA SERIRAMA YLPI Pekanbaru. In this research, the researcher provided the lyric of the song with the blank lyric. Then, the students were asked to complete the missing lyric of the song. This research is qualitative research. The researcher analysed and described the student’ English spelling error through the paper that the students fill with lyric of the song. There are some instruments in analysing the students’ English Spelling error. They are ; Omission of a letter, addition of a letter, single letter instead of double letter, double letter instead of single letter , substitution of one letter, interchange of two adjacent letter involving an apostrophe, erroneous splitting or joining of words/word segmentation error, and two or more error of the same type or of different types. The result of this research showed that, there are seven types that researcher found on spelling error. The type of omission of a letter was 31,91%. It is the highest percentage from the other types of error. Then, addition of a letter was 8,51%, single letter instead of double letter was 12,7%, double letter instead of single letter was 10,6%, substitution of one letter was 21,27% interchange two adjacent was 4,25%. Then, there is no error on involving an apostrophe and two or more error of the same type or different type (multiple error). Last, erroneous splitting or joining of words (word segmentation error) (10,6%). Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the most higher percentage error was on omission of letter type and the lowest percentage of errorr are involving an apostrophe and multiple error.
