Abstract

Intelligence in students is not only seen from their intelligence, but also from the ability of students to control, understand, and manage emotions well which is called emotional intelligence.Many factors can affect emotional intelligence, one of which is authoritarian parenting given by parents. This study aims to determine the relationship between authoritarian parenting and emotional intelligence in students at MTsN 8 Tanah Datar.The data collection method used in this study is the authoritarian parenting scale adapted by Faradhilasari (2018) which was developed from Robinson's theory (1995), and the emotional intelligence scale adapted by Yanti Astuti (2011) which was developed from Goelman's theory (1995). The sample in this study amounted to198 students of MTsN 8 Tanah Datar which was obtained from a non-probability sampling method, namely purposive sampling. Analysis of the data used in this study is using the Spearman Rho correlation technique.The results of statistical data analysis showed that there was a significant negative relationship between authoritarian parenting and emotional intelligence in MTsN 8 Tanah Datar students.This means that the higher the authoritarian parenting pattern, the lower the emotional intelligence of students, and vice versa, the lower the authoritarian parenting pattern, the higher the emotional intelligence of students.
