Abstract

This research is aimed to know students’ ability in the use of simple past tense as the problem that always faced by students when they learn about tense, specifically in learning past tense. The design of this research used descriptive design since it described and analyzed the quality of students’ ability in using past tense. The sample of this study is 43 students grade XI of SMA IT Fadhilah Pekanbaru. To get the data of this research, the researcher gave a several test by using google form to the students Grade XI of SMA IT Fadhilah Pekanbaru. The test focused on the simple past tense. The items consist of 20 items which are divided into some indicators. Their ability to use the regular and irregular verb in simple past form. The finding of this research shows that the average score in the form of the simple past tense is 43 students, about 37% categorized in excellent, 17% students categorized in good level, 16% students categorized in mediocre level, 23% students categorized in poor level, and 7% students categorized in very poor level. This percentage shows to us the students’ ability in the use of simple past tense in SMA IT Fadhilah Pekanbaru got a level Excellent.
