Abstract

The egrek knife is an important component in the oil palm plantation industry. The quality of egrek knives from home industry products is often unsatisfactory because there are several problems such as bending and breaking, things like this are very troublesome and even risky for oil palm farmers. As for the egrek knives produced by agricultural equipment companies, the price is quite high and more difficult to obtain, therefore this research only uses egrek knives which are equivalent to those produced by blacksmiths/home products. This research method starts with the heat treatment process on an egrek knife obtained from a blacksmith with the dimensions of an egrek knife in general. Then it was given heat treatment using a Furnace heater with SAE 20 W oil as a coolant, salt water, and bar soap, then Charpy impact test, brinell hardness test, and microstructure observation were carried out, then compared with a home industrial egrek knife. Of all the specimens, the highest toughness values were found in specimens without Heat Treatment, and the hardest were found in specimens cooled with salt water, but for an egrek knife the most ideal toughness and hardness values were found in specimens with SAE 20 W oil cooling medium.
