Abstract

Crude oil is usually produced from subsurface in the form of an emulsion of oil and water. The presence of water in crude oil on the surface causing some operational challenges in handling and processing facilities, which implies that the clear separation of crude oil is crucial to the economic and operational reasons as well as to get the good quality of the oil. Wells 1, 2 and 3 are well that could represent conditions of emulsion field X in general with each well emulsion level 20%, 62% and 45%. Water and oil emulsion separation done by chemical methods i.e. using demulsifier and reverse demulsifier and do variations against the concentration of the chemical being used. The separation of the emulsion with chemicals is basically the most appropriate way to break up the crude oil emulsion from an operational and financial point of view. Chemical separation can generate the most excellent separation efficiency than other methods. Evaluation of the success of this method will be seen from the water drop, turbidity and base sediment and water. Based on the results of the evaluation, the concentration of demulsifier based on the bottle test was smaller than the concentration of demulsifier used in field X, which was 14 ppm and 15 ppm. The concentration for reverse demulsifier on bottle tests biggest than used in Field X which are 5.5 ppm and 2.6 ppm. But with this concentration it can reduce the BS&W value from 0,7% to 0% (trace) resulting in the fastest water and oil separation of 5 minutes, and turbidity of 20.3 NTU which meets the desired emulsion separation criteria. Then the results of the bottle test for the separation of oil emulsion in field X can be recommended for better oil quality.
