Abstract

Formation water that has been produced together with oil and gas must be treated before being reinjected into the reservoir, where the formation water still contains various ionic compounds that can affect the production process. One way to treat formation water is by making activated carbon. from palm fronds, because it is believed that the activated carbon will absorb the compounds contained in the formation water. The production of activated carbon goes through three stages, namely the dehydration process, the carbonization process, and the activation process using H3PO4 activator with a concentration of 1 molar and a temperature of 600°C. The activated carbon test was carried out by immersing the formation water using a variation of 16 hours and 24 hours. The results of the activated carbon can be seen from the immersion yield, which is 0.72686%, the water content is 1.2948%, and the absorption capacity of iodine is 1,423 mg/g where the results of this activated carbon are in accordance with predetermined quality standards. And the results of the formation water treatment which was treated for 24 hours produced clearer and odorless water compared to 16 hours. With the total content obtained before the treatment was 3,192,872, then the 24-hour treatment was reduced to 3,121,963. However, the analysis results prove that the formation water treated with activated carbon has decreased ion content and the results obtained from the TSS test do not meet the standard standards so that there are still solids dissolved in the formation water.
