Abstract

This research is motivated by the low mathematical problem solving abilities of students on mathematics. This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on mathematical problem solving abilities of eighth grade students of Pekanbaru State Middle 9. This type of research is a quasi experiment with nonequivalent control group design research design and the sampling technique used is purposive sampling. The population in this study were all eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Pekanbaru in the school year of 2018/2019 using two classes as samples, namely the experimental class by applying the Problem-Based Learning model and the control class by applying conventional learning. The instrument used is a test of problem solving ability. The results of the study were analyzed through descriptive statistical analysis techniques and inferential statistical analysis techniques. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is an effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the mathematical problem solving abilities of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Pekanbaru on the material of Number Patterns
