Abstract

This study is motivated by the problem of students’ critical thinking abilities that occur in some students at SMAN 3 Singingi Hilir, Kuantan Singingi Regency. There are several problems such as students’ difficulties to think critically in understanding learning, students’ difficulties to ask questions about what they do not understand and so on. This study aims to investigate the effect of question and answer method on students’ critical thinking abilities in learning Islamic Studies at SMAN 3 Singingi Hilir, Kuantan Singingi Regency. The type of the study is quantitative with a correlational approach. The population and sample of the study are 131 students at SMAN 3 Singingi Hilir. The data collection techniques of the study are questionnaires and documentation. The study has two variables, the variable X (question and answer method) and the variable Y (critical thinking abilities). The result of the study on the effect of the question and answer method at SMAN 3 Singingi Hilir, Kuantan Singingi Regency is classified as very strong with a score of 82.8% or included in the range of 0.80-10,000. The students’ critical thinking abilities at SMAN 3 Singingi Hilir, Kuantan Regency, are very strong at 80.7% which is in the range of 0.80-10.000. The effect of the question and answer method (variable X) on the critical thinking abilities (variable Y) is 0.105 or 10.5%, which is in the range 0.00-0199 or lies in a very low category. It means that the ability to think critically is affected by the question and answer method which is categorized as very low. In conclusion, the results of the study show that there is an effect of question and answer method on students’ critical thinking abilities in learning Islamic Studies at SMAN 3 Singingi Hilir, Kuantan Singingi regency.
