Abstract

The background of the study is the learning motivation of Patani students (Southern Thailand) at the Faculty of Islamic Studies (FAI), Islamic University of Riau (UIR). This study aims to investigate the motivation of Patani students so they can learn and finish their studies at the Faculty of Islamic Studies (FAI). Learning motivation is the driving force within the students that creates learning activities, which guarantees the continuity of learning activities and provides direction to learning activities, so that the goals of the learning can be achieved. This study is very important because it aims to investigate the analysis of the learning motivation of Patani students at Islamic education study program (PAI) of the Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI). This study will contribute to adding the literature and insights about motivation in learning. The object of the study is the learning motivation of Patani students. The method of the study is descriptive qualitative method. The informants of the study are students from Patani, they are: Mr. Wan Ahmad, a student in academic year 2016; Mr. Muhammad hasafit Dudeh, a student in academic year 2016; and Mr. Hamdee Charong, a student in academic year 2018. The data collection techniques of the study are interviews and documentation. The arrangement and analysis the data of the study are conducted by providing raw data in the form of transcripts, field notes, and the views of the researcher and by organizing and describing data, building topics, interpreting and defining sequenced topics. Based on the results of the study, it is known that Patani students have weak understandings of Indonesian language, lack of knowledge of religion, lack of understanding of difficult materials, lack of self-confidence, lack of facilities in learning, lack of direction or tutors in learning and activities outside of academics, lack of interaction or hanging out with their classmates, and rather selfish.
