Abstract
In learning to listen, the students have to understand the meaning directly. The important thing in listening skills is the ability to comprehend information during listening activities. Some English foreign language (EFL) students still have problems in online learning. There were vocabulary limitation, structural component of the text, words recognition until the speaker’s pronunciation and the biggest problem is internet problem or connection problem. The aim of this study is to find out what listening strategies are frequently used by the fourth semester students of English language education at the Universitas Islam Riau. The research used qualitative method to find out the strategy used in online learning. The subject of this research were 30 students of fourth semester students’ class A and B. The instrument used in this research was interview and listening strategies questionnaire from R. oxford mixed Abdalhamid; memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies. The finding reveals that the fourth semester students’ using listening strategies in online learning were cognitive strategies (M=77,32%), social strategies (M=69,96%), and memory strategies (M=69,58%). Therefore, the listening strategies that are dominantly used by fourth semester students in online learning are cognitive strategies looking at the mean score (M=77,32%). In conclusion, the dominant listening strategies used by fourth semester students in learning listening are cognitive strategies.
