Abstract

A learning method is one of the important elements in the learning process and a teaching method is very influential for students to learn Arabic so that the targets and learning objectives can be achieved properly. One of the methods in learning Arabic is the Grammar-Translation method. Based on the preliminary study, the students at Madrasah Salafiyah Wustha of Khairul Ummah 2 Islamic Boarding School in Pekanbaru have already implemented the Grammar-Translation method in learning Nahwu, but it can be seen from the learning process that they are still not optimal in explaining, understanding and implementing the Grammar-Translation method in learning Nahwu. So, the reseacher is interested in doing a study on the implementation of Grammar-Translation method in learning Nahwu at Madrasah Salafiyah Wustha of Khairul Ummah 2 Islamic Boarding School in Pekanbaru. The problem formulation of the study is: First, how to implement the Grammar-Translation method in learning Nahwu at the Madrasah Salafiyah Wustha of Khairul Ummah 2 Islamic Boarding School in Pekanbaru; Second, what the obstacles faced by the students in implementing Grammar-Translation method in learning Nahwu at Madrasah Salafiyah Wustha of Khairul Ummah 2 Islamic Boarding School in Pekanbaru. This is a qualitative descriptive study. The results of the study show that the Grammar-Translation method implemented at the Madrasah Salafiyah Wustha of Khairul Ummah 2 Islamic Boarding School in Pekanbaru is by simplifying the Qawaid method and trimming or removing the rules that are not too important. With the Qawaid and translation learning design, it only takes about 3 months and 3 levels for the students to master and practice in making Arabic sentences with optimal results. The obstacles in the implementation of the Grammar-Translation method are the lack of innovation in learning by the ustadz, the lack of students’ vocabulary, the students do not focus on receiving the material and the lack of basic knowledge in understanding it.
