Abstract

Corrosion is an electro-chemical reaction process between metal and the environment which produces ions which can reduce the quality of the metal. There are several ways to reduce the corrosion rate of aluminum material, one of which is by adding inhibitors. Papaya leaves are one type of plant that can be used as a natural inhibitor because they contain tannins. Aluminum is a light metal that has good corrosion resistance, good electrical conductivity and one of the materials that has abundant reserves in the world. In this study, aluminum 6061 was tested for corrosion under various conditions, namely wet (in ), dry (in air) and cyclic (a combination of wet and dry). Tests were carried out using the weight loss method, data were taken at immersion time, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 days. Papaya leaf extract inhibitor was added as much as 2500 ppm under cyclic conditions to determine the effect on the corrosion rate. The results showed that wet conditions had the highest corrosion rate, namely 6.2681 mm/y, whereas dry corrosion had the lowest corrosion rate, namely 0.14776 mm/y. The corrosion rate in the cyclic environment is 4.62556 mm/y. the addition of 2500 ppm of papaya leaf extract inhibitor reduced the corrosion rate to 2.46284 mm/y. The highest inhibitor efficiency was 85.18% but decreased to 31.31% at 16 days immersion.
