Abstract

The electroplating process is the process of coating metal with other metals in an electrolyte solution by refracting an electric current. The purpose of the electroplating process is to protect metal from corrosion, increase friction resistance, increase hardness and make objects look more attractive. In this study, aluminum metal, which is widely used as foot steps on motorcycles, was electroplated using a variety of nickel, chrome and nickel-chrome coatings. The coating material was tested for corrosion in sulfuric acid solution for 20 days each. Loss of weight of the specimens was observed every 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 days. The test object is then observed with an optical microscope to determine the type of corrosion that occurs. The results showed that the coating of Ni, Cr and Ni-Cr can reduce the corrosion rate of aluminum. The corrosion rate of the starting material without coating obtained an average of 6.2681 mm/y. Coating with Ni-Cr resulted in a material with the lowest corrosion rate, namely 0.72262 mm/y, while coating with Cr resulted in the lowest corrosion rate reduction, namely 4.07242 mm/y. The best protection is given by the Ni-Cr coating because it has reduced the corrosion rate by 88%. Even so, the corrosion rate is still in the moderate category. This is because the H 2 SO 4 corroding medium used is a strong acid. Observation of the surface of the material shows that the corrosion that occurs is pitting and uniform corrosion.
