Abstract

This research is entitled "The Phenomenon of Electric Cigarettes (Vaporizers) as Self-Existence in Students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Riau Islamic University". The problem in this study is what are the motives of students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Islamic University of Riau to use electric cigarettes (vaporizer) and what is the meaning of electric cigarettes (vaporizer) as a self-existence for students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Islamic University of Riau. The purpose of this study was to find out the motives and meanings of electric cigarettes (vaporizers) as self-existence of students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Islamic University of Riau. To analyze these problems, Alfred Schutz's theory of phenomenology was used. The method used in this research is qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The location of this research was carried out around the Riau Islamic University campus. Research informants were selected by purposive sampling by taking 5 student informants from the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Riau Islamic University. The results of this study indicate that students' motives for using electric cigarettes consist of two motives. First, the because of motive, namely: the influence of friends, environmentally friendly, good taste and variety, more contemporary and cool. Second, the objective motive (in order to motive) , namely: to reduce addiction to conventional cigarettes, to save costs. The process of awareness in students in using electric cigarettes (vaporizer) is through a process of subjective awareness, intersubjective awareness, objective awareness. The meaning of electric cigarettes as a student's self-existence is: as a tool to express a modern lifestyle.
