Abstract

Comparison of roles between men and women that are intertwined in the reality of citizens' lives. The position of men is considered to have more power or power than the female gender. Women are reflected as weak beings and only obey men's orders to understand and explain what is meant by gender equality in Mulan (2020). This study uses a qualitative approach. Qualitative research aims to understand phenomena such as behavior, perceptions, motivations, actions, etc. as experienced by the research subjects. Mulan films are depicted if Mulan skills are not recognized. Mulan as a woman is required to be a graceful, quiet wife. In the area of the Chinese population, the social structure is a patrilineal kinship system where the family is led by a man, so that men have more power than women. But in the middle of the film, Mulan experienced a shift where Mulan was given the authority to become the leader of the royal troops and received appreciation from the king for saving the king of all the people of the kingdom. Based on the analysis attempted by researchers regarding the Representation of Gender Equality in the film Mulan 2020, it uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which relies on denotation, connotation, myth. In the film Mulan, it is seen that a woman accepts the challenge to show that a woman should not be underestimated and not recognized because she has the same degree as men.
