Abstract

This research was intended to describe the category of English affixes found in reading comprehension parts of English Textbook Based on 2013 Curriculum For Grade XII Published By KEMENDIKBUD RI. Affixes are the bound morphemes that added to a word and it can change the meaning or category of the word grammatically, it is called derivational affixes. Derivational affixes consist of two types generally, they are: prefixes and suffixes. Prefixes are a morpheme or affix that attached before the root and performed to be other classes of word, while the suffixes are morphemes which added at the end of the roots. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The researcher got source of data from English textbook published by KEMENDIKBUD RI, this textbook is second revised edition of 2018 and the researcher analyzed English affixes from nineteen texts in the English textbook. Otherwise, the researcher categorized the affixes into for group majors such as adverb maker, adjective maker, noun maker, and verb maker. The results of this research show that derivational affixes (prefixes and suffixes), which the prefixes consist of pre-, un-, re-. While, the suffixes are divided into four categories, they are nominal or noun maker, verbal or verb maker, adjectival or adjective maker, and adverbial or adverb maker. First, nominal suffixes or noun maker are –ion, -ist, -ity, -y, -ic, -ment, -ness, -er, -ing, ence, -ty, and -ation. Second, verbal suffixes or verb maker are –en. Third, adjectival suffixes or adjective maker are –ful, -ed, -able, -al, -ite, -ive, -ing, -ous, -ful,-cy, ent, and the last is adverbial suffix or adverb maker –ly. Regarding the result of finding, it seems that most of derivational affixes (prefixes and suffixes) appear in the text of reading comprehension parts in English textbook based on 2013 curriculum for grade XII published by KEMENDIKBUD RI.
