Abstract

Corrosion is a problem that often occurs in metal media, including the oil and gas industry which uses various metals such as iron and steel. One way to slow down the corrosion rate is to use corrosion inhibitors. One of the ingredients of mangosteen peel extract that can be used as a corrosion inhibitor is tannin. Tannins have the ability to form complex compounds because they have elements that have lone pairs that function as electron donors to Fe2+ metal which functions as inhibitors. In extracting the mangosteen rind, maceration method was used using ethanol as a solvent. To test the decrease in the corrosion rate, a sample of steel pipe that has been cut into several pieces of slab was used, then a coating method was applied to the pipe and immersion was carried out using formation water dissolved in the mangosteen rind extraction inhibitor in various concentrations and immersion times. After that, the corrosion rate was calculated using the weight loss method. Then perform the FTIR test to determine the functional group. The immersion process uses aquadest dissolved with HCL to become an acid solution of PH 3. The concentration variations carried out are 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% with a 5 day and 9 day immersion test. The best efficiency of the mangosteen rind extract inhibitor was found in the variation of the concentration of 2% in the 5 day immersion test with an efficiency of 63%. The corrosion rate will increase with increasing immersion time, this is indicated by immersion for 5 days there is the highest corrosion rate of 3.4733 mpy while at 9-day immersion there is the highest corrosion rate of 3.8879 mpy.
