Abstract

This study is motivated by the problem of students’ learning participation that occurs at SMPN 1 Tualang in Siak Regency. There are several problems, such as some students are less active in the learning process, some students are not enthusiastic in the learning process, some students are not confident in the learning process, some students tend to do other activities, and some students prefer to sleep in class. This study aims to investigate whether there is an effect of the inquiry method on the students’ learning participation in grade VIII at SMPN 1 Tualang in Siak Regency. This is a quantitative study with a correlational approach. The subject of the study is the students in grade VIII at SMPN 1 Tualang in Siak Regency. The population of the study consists of 270 students with a sample of 161 students. The data collection techniques of the study are questionnaires and documentation. Based on the results of the study, it is found that there is an effect of the inquiry method on the students’ learning participation in grade VIII at SMPN 1 Tualang in Siak Regency. From that the results of simple regression analysis, it is known that the significance value of 0.000, because 0.000 < 0.05 so the alternative hypothesis is accepted. The magnitude of the effect of the inquiry method is 0.382 or 38.2% which is categorized as weak, because it is in the range of 0.20-0.399 in the correlation coefficient interpretation table, while the remaining 61.8% is influenced by other factors. Thus, the alternative hypothesis is accepted. The level of relationship between the inquiry method and the students’ learning participation in grade VIII at SMPN 1 Tualang in Siak Regency is included in the weak category.
