Abstract

This study aims to describe the function of music in the Gendong dance of the Akit tribe in Kembung Baru Village, Bantan District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. The theory used by researchers in this study is to use the theory of Hidajat (2011: 100), which discusses the function of music in dance which has three functions, namely music as an accompaniment or motion partner, music as an affirmation of motion, and music as an illustration. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The object in this research is the function of music in the gendong dance. The subject in this study is the function of the music itself. The research is focused on the function of music in the gendong dance. Data collection is done by: (1) Observation, (2) Interview and (3) Documentation. The data is carried out in the following ways: (1) Data reduction, (2) Data presentation, (3) Conclusions. The results of the research show that: (1) The function of music in the gendong dance consists of (a) Music as an accompaniment or motion partner, (b) As an affirmation of motion, (c) and as an illustration. Musical performances are performed in a sitting position. The dancers only need to dance in the initial position and then change positions until they return to their original position. The harmony of sound is found in the instrument.
