Abstract
Drilling operations are important activities carried out to prove whether a field contains hydrocarbons or not. In a drilling operation there must be various problems that must be faced. One of the problems that are often found is swelling. Oil-based mud is a drilling mud that uses oil-based materials. This mud system is the most widely used system in today's drilling operations. Good lubrication effect and can be used at high temperatures which will help stabilize reactive clay so that swelling will not occur. Therefore, researchers want to conduct research on making oil-based mud based on biodiesel and used cooking oil and see the effect of NaCl salt contamination and temperature. The addition of NaCl salt concentration and temperature was carried out because in drilling there are often non-ideal physical and rheological properties of the mud. This study was conducted to determine the effect of NaCl salt contamination and temperature variations in oil based mud using biodiesel and used cooking oil on density, plastic viscosity, yield point, gel strength, filtration loss, mud cake and pH testing of mud. The overall best oil base mud base material and in accordance with API standards is biodiesel based oil based mud which shows a density value () 12.65-12.9 (lb/gal), plastic viscosity (μP) 15-33 (cp), yield point (YP) 4-24 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 seconds 5-15 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 minutes 5-15 (lb/100ft2), pH 11, filtration loss 2.6-4.3 (ml) and mud cake 1.35-1,475 (mm). Meanwhile, oil based mud is made from used cooking oil which shows a density value () 12.1-12.45 (lb/gal), plastic viscosity (μP) 71-145 (cp), yield point (YP) 43-92 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 seconds 19-35 (lb/100ft2), gel strength 10 minutes 24-41 (lb/100ft2), pH 10, filtration loss 5.4-6 (ml) and mud cake 3.2-3.425 (mm). Based on the test results, it can be concluded that used cooking oil has the potential to be used as a basic ingredient for making oil based mud. With a note that cooking oil must be filtered and added additives that support it to overcome parameters that are not in accordance with API standards.
