Abstract

The Meaning Of Mangulosi At The Toba Batak Customary Death Ceremony Tri Bastian Haloho 139110021 The shift that occurred in the procession of the death ceremony in the Batak Toba tribe attracts attention at this time, this is because the customary procession held has not understood the meaning that depends on one of them at the Mangulosi event, even at the death ceremony in the Batak tribe toba the ulos media used is not appropriate with the provisions that should use sibolang ulos but until now the community still does not pay attention to these things. The purpose of this study was to determine the Meaning of Mangulosi at the Toba Batak Customary Death Ceremony. In this research the applied theory is the Symbolic Interaction of George Herbet Mead which examines the meaning of symbols through the mind, self and society. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method by determining the six informants based on purposive sampling by using interview, observation and documentation data collection techniques that are analyzed using Miles and Huberman through the process of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. So from the process carried out there are several things that are the results in this research based on the mind, as a part of grieving, expressing affection for those who have been left behind and who have died and accompanied by prayers and based on themselves as addressing obedience to adat, and addressing the sad side and the procession of manujung, meaning ulos, is a symbol of widower or widow, while in the procession, the ulos saput is meant as a farewell because the procession is at the end of the event. From the procession of the ceremony, there were three who did not use ulos in accordance with the provisions and one of those who did not use ulos in accordance with these provisions chose ulos in accordance with their favorite color during their lifetime. and based on the community, said that the three ceremonial processions had carried out the mangulosi activity even though it was not in accordance with customary provisions.
