Abstract
This study aims to determine the types of errors made by students, the factors that cause student errors, and efforts to overcome the errors made by students in solving problems on the flat-sided building material at SMP Negeri 2 Seberida, Indragiri Hulu Regency. The subjects of this research were 28 students of class VIII SMP Negeri 2 Seberida. Data collection techniques used are tests and interviews. Data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. In the discussion of data based on qualitative analysis which includes data reduction, and drawing conclusions. In this study using the stages of error analysis according to Newman's theory, which obtained types of reading errors with an error percentage of 21%, errors in understanding problems with an error percentage of 44%, transformation errors with an error percentage of 19%, process skill errors with an error percentage of 40%, and types of final answer writing error with an error percentage of 64%. The most mistakes made by students were errors in writing the final answer. While the least errors made by students were transformation errors. This is because students are in a hurry to do calculations, do not understand how to operate calculations, are not used to writing conclusions, lack of effort and lack of confidence in answering questions. Efforts that can be made are teachers should emphasize students not to repeat the same mistakes.
