Abstract

Paving block or concrete brick is a component of building materials made from a mixture of portland cement, water and aggregate or other additives. The higher demand for paving blocks as infrastructure materials, the higher the productivity of paving blocks. Increased productivity of paving blocks will not be separated from the availability of raw materials for making paving blocks such as cement and sand. This research was conducted to reduce the use of some cement as a mixed material for making paving blocks with rice husk ash, the aim is to determine the effect of adding rice husk ash to the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks. Rice husk ash as a partial substitute for cement used a mixture percentage of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight of cement, in testing the compressive strength and water absorption for 28 days. In this study using SNI 03-0691-1996. For testing the compressive strength using a cube test object measuring 6 x 6 x 6 cm, and for testing water absorption using a test object measuring 20 x 10 x 6 cm. Based on the research conducted, the value of the compressive strength of paving blocks, 0% variation is 231.32 kg/cm2, 5% is 175.61 kg/cm2, 10% is 148.95 kg/cm2, 15% is 135.58kg/cm2 , and 20% of 121.70 kg/cm2. For water absorption in paving blocks at variations of 0% and 5%, respectively, namely 5.94% and 6.17%. The 10% variation has 8.43% water absorption. The 15% and 20% variations are 12.96% and 13.50%, respectively. Based on the research conducted, it can be concluded that the use of rice husk ash can be used as a partial replacement for cement in the manufacture of paving blocks to reduce rice husk waste in the surrounding area.
