Abstract

In the oil and gas industry, surfactants are used as one of the EOR (enhanched oil recovery) methods. Generally, the surfactants used are anionic surfactants which are produced using chemicals. If the surfactant is often used. This will result in pollution to the environment. In this study, the surfactant used was Methyl Ester Sulfonate anionic surfactant (MES) which was produced from used cooking oil. as an alternative to using used cooking oil so that the environment is not removed. Because the composition of used cooking oil contains fatty alcohol content of the anionic surfactant (MES) Methyl Ester Sulfonate. This study aims to determine the characteristics of used cooking oil before the MES surfactant production process is carried out, to determine the characteristics of MES surfactants and to determine the results of MES surfactant compatibility from used cooking oil for initial screening for use in advanced methods, with concentrations of 0.1%, 0.3%, 1.5%, 0.7%, 1% and 2% and using modified formation water of 10,000 ppm, 15,000 ppm and 20,000 ppm. The methods used in this study are the esterification and transesterification methods, followed by several stages of testing the MES surfactant characteristics of cooking oil including color, pH, density, acid number, saponification number, and used HLB (Hydrophylic-Lipophylic Balance). The results of the MES test for used cooking oil have a white color and the presence of white deposits, pH 7, density 0.895 g / ml, acid number 11.2 mgNaOH/MES sponging number 1,178 mg KOH/MES, (HLB) 17.89 and the best results from clear compatibility testing in the scenario 0.1% with 15,000 ppm modified formation water at room temperature, while the thermal compatibility is visually clear in the 0.1% scenario with 15,000 ppm. The conclusion of the characteristic test is that the MES surfactants obtained are classified as oil-soluble surfactants and w / o elmusifier and the results of thermal compatibility in formation water are MES surfactants that can be implemented in the advanced method for low concentrations.
