Abstract

Students have low scores on reading comprehension skills. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant effect of using Conversational Discussion Group Strategy in reading comprehension on second grade students' reading comprehension in descriptive texts. The design of this study is a quasi-experimental design. The population of this research is second grade students at SMP 37 Pekanbaru in the academic year 2021-2022. The total number of student population is 242 students. Samples were taken using cluster random sampling. The sample of this study was class VIII.5 which consisted of 34 students as the control class and VIII.6 which consisted of 34 students as the experimental class. The number of samples from these two classes is 68 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used an independent sample T-test through SPSS 24. After calculating data, the researcher found value of Tcalculated (tc) In Experimental Class was 9.066 and the degree of freedom (df) is 33. While Ttable (tt) of level significant 5% was 1.692. It can read 9.066 > 1.692. It means that Tcalculated higher than Ttable. Futhermore it could be seen that the significant 5% 0.01 < 0.05. Therefore, Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be conclude that there was significant effect of using Conversation Discussion Group stratey on reading comprehension in the second grade at Smp 37 Pekanbaru
