Abstract
Vocabulary is collection of word of words that are used to construct sentences in order to communicate effectively. English vocabulary is an essential component of good English communication. The purpose of this study was to determine students' vocabulary mastery in descriptive text at SMPN 25 Pekanbaru. This is a quantitative research design with 60 grade VIII students as a sample at SMPN 25 Pekanbaru. A multiple choice collect data for this study. The multiple choice cloze vocabulary test was used to assess students’ knowledge of descriptive text vocabulary. According to the findings of the study, students' vocabulary mastery in descriptive text was 59%, putting them in the lower level. In this study, five indicators were used: spelling, affixes (prefix, root, suffix), synonym, antonym, and grammatical verb. The overall mean score for each indicator for the students was 70.3 for spelling, 58.6 for affixes (prefix, root, suffix), 64.3 for synonym, 65 for antonym, and 48.3 for antonym.
