Abstract

In Autism Service Center Province of Riau, autistic children get therapy to help them get calm in the psyche, one of the music therapies in snoezelen therapy. The aim of this study was to determine the implementation of music for autistic children through snoezelen therapy at the Pekanbaru autism service center, Riau Province. The theory that used in this implementation research using Usman’s theory (2002) the implementation leads to activities, actions, behavior, or the existence of a system mechanism. Singh (2004) multi-sensory stimulation provided in a snoezelen room is being used increasingly for individuals with mental retardation and mental illness to facilitate relaxation, provide enjoyment, and inhibit behavioral challenges. This research is qualitative, in which the researcher observes, explains and describes the findings. The subjects in this study were autistic children at the Autism Service Center, Riau. The data collection techniques using observation, interviews and documentation. The result of this study indicate that music has an effect on children with autism. The music changes attention, perception, and memory and affects autistic children towards (1) vision in the mechanism of the effect of light and make children with autism not easily give in to the desire to explore themselves through music, (2) listening through the emotional communication of autistic children in music provides an opportunity to express without words when in a condition that cannot be expressed verbally, (3) autistic children's tactile sensors are not fully developed and after being stimulated through music therapy the child tends to dance, tapping with strong beats from the rhythm of the music, (4) olfaction is found in consistency in response to music and aromatherapy which provides a relatively calming surroundings.
