Abstract

Spray coating is a coating process using high pressure wind which will coat the metal. One of the materials that has strong adhesion and good resisting properties for friction is a layer of silica gel. This study aims to increase the value of quality and hardness on the worm screw. In this study, the material to be coated is a worm screw press, variations of silica coating are 2 layers, 4 layers and 6 layers with a spraying distance of 30 cm in 15 minutes. The results of the highest silica gel layer thickness occurred in 4 layers, namely 1814.59 m with a percentage increase of 18.14%. The results of hardness (Brinell) in sample 1 with 0 layers of silica gel are 196.04 kg/mm2, along with the increase in silica gel layers in samples 2, 3 and 4, the hardness value is 204.69 kg/mm2, 204.9 kg /mm2 and 205.64 kg/mm2. This happens because there is a relationship between the thickness of the layer and the hardness, the increasing thickness of the silica gel layer results in an increase in the hardness of the steel, so this relationship occurs linearly. The results of the compressive strength on a worm screw press without a layer or 0 layers of silica gel is 166.773 MPa, in sample 2 with 2 layers the compressive strength value increases by 212.686 MPa, continues to increase in sample 3 with 4 layers which is 404.201 MPa, while in sample 4 it occurs the decrease in compressive strength value is 275.755 MPa. This is because the thickness of the silica gel layer is getting thicker, it will reduce the value of compressive strength. Thus, it can be concluded that a thick layer does not mean good for compressive strength values, because silica deposits on the surface of the substrate decrease, resulting in cracks occurring after compressive strength is carried out in 6 layers.
