Abstract

California papaya farming in Rumbai District is quite a promising business, but in carrying it out there must be problems that can affect production, namely the use of inadequate agricultural technology. California papaya farmers tend to use traditional equipment in the processing, maintenance, and marketing processes. The objectives of the study were to analyze: 1) Characteristics of farmers and traders and farm profile 2) Cultivation techniques, use of production factors, production costs, production, farm income and efficiency 3) Marketing (channels and institutions, functions, costs, margins, profits, farmer share, efficiency). The study used a survey method in Rumbai District, Pekanbaru City. Sample selection was done by purposive sampling or intentionally to 30 farmers. Primary data was collected through direct interviews using questionnaires and secondary data. The data analysis technique used in this study used qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. Based on the results of the study, several conclusions can be drawn, namely the average age of the farmer is 37.43 years, the length of education is 10.2 years, the experience of farming is 5.57 years, the average number of family dependents is 3 people. Farming is an individual business with a medium-scale personal capital of Rp 11,347,924.00. The average use of papaya seeds is 1,087 stems/ha, the use of manure is 326 kg/ha, NPK fertilizer is 109 kg/ha, the use of gandasil and dithane pesticides is 254 grams and 425 grams, the use of labor for 39 HOK , the production cost is Rp. 9,975,791.16/production period. The selling price is Rp. 5,396.67/kg with a yield of 4,273.60 kg/production period, the average income of farmers is Rp. 22,748,990.00 with an average total cost of Rp. 9,975,791.16, net income of Rp. Rp 12,773,198.84/production period, and RCR of 2.28. California papaya farming uses 3 marketing channels, namely: 1) farmers - consumers, 2) farmers traders - retailers - consumers, 3) farmers traders collectors - retailers - consumers. The marketing functions carried out in the marketing of California papaya in Rumbai District are the sales function, the purchase function, the transportation function and the market information function. The average marketing cost incurred by channel I is Rp. 205.29/kg, channel II is Rp. 238.11/kg. Channel III is Rp 230.00/kg and retailers Rp 263.43/kg.
