Abstract

The link is part of the chain that can withstand tensile stresses and can withstand dynamic forces from shock loads. transmits power between parallel shafts. This study aims to analyze link failure on chain scraper conveyors in palm oil mills. This study aims to analyze the link failure on the chain scraper conveyor at the palm oil mill. In this study, the link material is AISI 1045 steel with type VH060N. The results of the microstructure research show that the ratio of ferrite and pearlite phases coincides and will create a cavity (porosity) and cause the link on the chain scraper conveyor to be broken or damaged. The calculation results are seen from the chain specifications where Fmax = 31,500 Kg, then the load that occurs is 243,100 kg, the load that occurs is greater than the maximum load. The results of the highest tensile strength on the new link is 1034.75 MPa and the lowest tensile strength on the old link is 959.22 MPa. The tensile strength of the link greatly determines the quality of the chain scraper conveyor. This is because the higher the tensile strength, the stronger the link and conversely the lower the tensile strength, the lower the strength of the chain scraper conveyor. The results of the impact test above with testing of the two links on the chain scraper conveyor. From the data obtained, the highest Impact price on the old link is 130 Joule/mm2 and the lowest impact price on the new link is 125 Joule/mm2. This is because the higher the impact strength, the easier the link will be broken and vice versa, the lower the impact strength, the more ductile the link on the chain scrapper conveyor will be.
