Abstract
Development in an area should be optimized in sectors which are the leading sectors of the region. This leading sector is a driving force for other sectors and has a very large link with other sectors. Therefore, the government in regional economic development must be more attentive and focused on the leading sectors of the region. This is because leading sectors can have a simultaneous impact on other sectors of the economy. In connection with the problems raised, this study uses descriptive and qualitative methods. The data found in the field will be used as the main data to identify the leading economic sectors in the Meranti Islands Regency. Then to identify the leading economic sector typologies found in the Meranti Islands District. The analytical method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Descriptive method is a method used to describe or analyze a research result but does not draw broader conclusions. Based on research results From 17 business fields / sectors in Meranti Regency there are 3 leading sectors, namely Category (A), Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Category (H) Transportation and Warehousing sector and Category (O) Government Administration, Defense sector and Mandatory Social Security. Based on the typology, the leading sectors are all included in type III, namely the superior sector is not proactive.
