Abstract

This study aims to find out how the motives for using Instagram social media as a self-presentation and how self-presentation is shown on Instagram social media. This research used a qualitative method by conducting interviews and observations to six research subjects with the characteristics of students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Riau Islamic University who were active in using Instagram social media. This research uses dramaturgical theory by Erving Goffman which explains selfpresentation. The results of the study explained that the motives for using Instagram social media as student self-presentation include being a form of selfappreciation and self-respect, forming personal branding, archival media, pleasure or hobbies, and attracting attention. The self-presentation on the front stage is carried out in various ways by considering the setting, appearance (Appearance) attributes, and style or attitude (manner). Meanwhile, on the back stage is a reality that exists in the daily life of individuals, such as activities and performances which on the back stage are not much different from the front stage.
