Abstract

The Tampan Mental Hospital is a referral hospital in Riau Province for patients with mental disorders. This is where the role of medical personnel is needed to try to cure patients with mental disorders. Communication is needed by every medical personnel and paramedics for the healing process of patients. If communication is formed right this will save this nation from loss due to declining national productivity. One effort is how communication is achieved in the healing process. The purpose of this study is to know the therapeutic communication activities in the care of patients with psychiatric disorders at the Pekanbaru Tampan Mental Hospital and know the supporting factors and inhibiting factors for the therapeutic communication activities in the care of patients with psychiatric disorders at the Tampan Mental Hospital in Pekanbaru. The research method used is a qualitative method. From the results of the study note that the Nurse Therapeutic Communication Process in the Treatment of Mental Patients using nonverbal therapeutic communication. Based on observations in this study, there are two nonverbal communications that are often used by nurses unconsciously, namely kinesic communication and paralinguistic communication. Kinesik in the form of implementation of verbal messages in body movements is done by nurses such as giving medicine. Nurses not only communicate verbally, but also move the hands to the mouth of the mouth giving examples of how to take medication. The obstacle of nurses in applying therapeutic communication in handling mental patients is the obstacle nurses in conducting nursing care is feedback from patients. Patient responses are performed with verbal language that is not understood by nurses. For example, patients who speak regional languages like. Conditions like this occur miscommunication because in addition to nurses not understanding the verbal language that patients convey, the patient's nonverbal messages are difficult for nurses to understand. The nurse is facilitated by a patient friend who understands the local language to convey to the nurse about what the patient intended.
