Abstract

This study aims to determine the motives and social reality of young people in the coffee shop as a means of communication and interaction. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this research are young people who visit Chinos Coffeespace and Local Dealer. The method of data collection is through interviews with nine respondents. The results showed that the motives of young people visiting coffee shops were not only to enjoy coffee, but as a place to hang out with friends and co-workers, do college and work assignments, play games, and so on. In addition, the majority of respondents tend to actively invite friends to "nongkrong (hang out)" at the coffee shop. The social reality found is that young people have considered enjoying coffee at a coffee shop as a culture and lifestyle. Then, the coffee shop became a means of group communication to gather and spend time with friends and business colleagues, express themselves through events, and improve relationships with other people. In addition, although coffee shop is identical with noise, respondents do not feel it becomes a communication barrier to interact with friends.
